Helping a couple add a child to their family is truly one of the great joys of practicing law. At the Neyland Law Firm, we take pride in taking care of the legal details of the adoption process, so you don't have to. Adopting a child is a legal process, and must be approved by a judge.
STEPS OF ADOPTING A CHILD IN MISSISSIPPI
The adoption process starts just like any other claim in Mississippi, with the filing of a complaint or petition. Any person who may have an interest in the adoption should be served with a copy of the petition, as well as a summons, notifying them of the initiation of the adoption proceeding.
Once all the interested parties have been notified of the proceedings, anyone who may have an objection to the adoption will have an opportunity to make an appearance in the adoption proceeding and state their objection.
If there is an objection to the adoption, there will be a hearing to determine if there is sufficient cause to allow the adoption to proceed in spite of the objection of one or both of the natural parents. Following any such hearing, the court will determine whether the adoption should proceed.
